According to the Encyclopedia reading, exploitation can be most simply defined in the following way: "A exploits B when A takes unfair advantage of B." However, this article goes on to explain that this kind of basic definition must be unpacked in order to be applicable to the wide variety of situations of exploitation claims around the world. In this regard, it is clear than an exploitation continuum would be useful, particularly when taking an anthropological stance. The vast cultural diversity across the world, and the diverse nature of relationships in which exploitation can occur, cannot be understood under the same umbrella definition. Cultural relativity must be considered and participation from a variety of individuals (including the exploiter and the victim) must occur in order to fully understand the situation. This way, it can be determined whether the exploitation claim is true or false and where it lies on this continuum.
