Establishing a Children's Commissioner

According to the four documents provided with information regarding the establishment on a Children's Commissioner, the general consensus appears to believe that it would be for the best interest of children in Canada. I believe that the Unicef website provides the best description by explaining that there is no current office, committee, or minister at the federal level of government responsible for considering the impact of law, regulations and programs on children. The desire for a Children’s Commissioner would benefit Canadian children by working across federal departments with provincial and territorial child and youth advocates to make laws, policies, and programs to work specifically for children.

After reading further, I found that the article on Attawaska, as well as many NDP and Liberal MP’s discussing Bill C-420 (to institute a Children’s Commissioner) believed that it would be beneficial in (2011 and 2012). Alternatively, Conservative MP’s disregarded the need for a Children’s Commissioner as too expensive or redundant. In the end, the bill was not passed although many who advocated for it countered the belief that it would be redundant. MP Irwin Cotler has introduced a new bill, inspired by Bill C-420, in which to ask for a Commissioner for children and young persons to be instituted.
