Establishing a Children's Commissioner

Hearing that Canada has no representation for children on the Federal stage was appalling to me. For a country that is seen as so progressive, especially when it comes to youth Canada is failing to acknowledge children's agency and right to participation by not allowing them proper representation, especially when it comes to issues facing children.

When examining the case of Attawapiskat this need is especially clear. Canada is failing in its duty to put children first but not allowing them representation. A Children's Commissioner would rectify many of Canada's short coming when it comes to our nations approach to children. In cases like Attawapiskat it would allow for a clear intervention and it would help prevent the prolonged processes that are currently undergoing with regards to policy and approach to aid in that community. A Children's Rights Commissioner would not be bound by a specific portfolio and would be able to approach issues such as that one with more resources then any individual or portfolio currently can under our government structure.

All and all I think that a Children's Commissioner is not only necessary but long overdue.
