In 2002 the United Nations held a special session in which they addressed 4 focuses that would be recognized by countries around the world. Countries were to take these 4 points and apply them in their approach to children moving forward. These 4 points were:

1. Promoting healthy living and healthy lifestyles

2. Providing quality education to all children

3. Protecting children from violence and abuse

4. Combating HIV AIDS

In 2004 Canada took these 4 points and developed an official document called A Canada Fit for Children in which the government outlined how they intended to meet and apply these. The 2004 document outlined the following:

1. Supporting families and building safe inclusive communities

2. Promoting healthy lives

3. Protection

4. Education

While these things were all outlined in the document and these sound like reasonable things to expect for Canadian children they are more an ideal than a reality. In 2015 an unofficial revision of this document was drafted and published by Landon Pearson. In this new document it is pointed out that the government has failed to provide for children what it promised. The 2015 version of this document is challenging the government with the idea that having achieved these things for a majority is still not good enough from a child rights stand point. In other words the 2015 document is a reminder to Canada that there is still work to be done and improvements to be made for children.
