Child exploitation as a continuum

There are a variety of definitions that can be used to describe what exploitation is.  One of the most basic definitions of exploitation involves unfairly taking advantage of another.  By analyzing exploitation as a continuum it helps expand the ways in which we understand this definition.  In terms of sexual exploitation, this continuum can range from sexually explicit images of children to sexual abuse or commercial sexual exploitation.  This not only acknowledges the ways in which children are experiencing different ways of being exploited but that there is also this power imbalance that is present when a child is sexually exploited.  For example, if a child is trafficked into the sex industry, the individuals in control of these children will make it as difficult as possible for them to avoid being exploited.
