Forums (Discussion Boards)

Forums enable participants to have asynchronous discussions i.e. discussions that take place over an extended period of time. Your course may have one or more of these types of forums:

  1. Standard forum for general use –  anyone can start a new discussion at any time
  2. Standard forum displayed in a blog-like format – anyone can start a new discussion at any time, and in which discussion topics are displayed on one page with “Discuss this topic” links
  3. Q and A forum – students must first post their perspectives before viewing other students’ posts
  4. Each person posts one discussion – each student can post exactly one new discussion topic, which everyone can reply to

To access a Forum, click on its name on the course page. Read any forum rules that the instructor may have posted. You may Add a new discussion topic or Reply to an existing post. You can Edit or Delete any of your own posts. The instructor may have allowed files to be attached to forum posts. Attached images are displayed within the forum post.

An instructor can set the subscription mode to optional, forced or auto, or prevent subscription completely. (Subscription simply means that you will receive an email notification each time a post is made to the forum in which you are subscribed; you will receive notifications of new posts in your Carleton email account).
Forum posts can be rated by teachers or students (peer evaluation).

Note: Students can neither post nor reply to the News Forum.
